Database of Molybdenum in Human Health and the Environment

This Database, developed and maintained by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA), and updated twice yearly, provides easy access to literature on molybdenum and its compounds in biochemistry, biology and the environment. The literature is organised broadly into these categories:

Relevant chemistry and biochemistry of molybdenum including speciation  in aqueous solutions; molybdenum and enzymes; interactions with other trace elements especially copper; molybdenum in human health including industrial and environmental exposure of humans and toxicity;  therapeutic uses of molybdenum; molybdenum in the Geosphere (soils and sediments), the Hydrosphere (rivers, oceans), the Atmosphere and in the  Biosphere (plants,  bacteria, animals, fish); experimental Studies of molybdenum physiology and toxicity.

It consists of published abstracts, as retrieved from the original literature, with the occasional addition of explanatory notes. Users of the Database should be aware that inclusion of an abstract in the Database does not imply any IMOA endorsement of the accuracy or reliability of the reported data or the quality of a publication.

The Database was started in the 1990’s, many years before the advent of the EU REACH Regulation 1907 (2006).  The REACH Molybdenum Consortium (MoCon), an initiative of IMOA, conducted the scientific research and testing necessary for the human health, environment and physico-chemical risk assessment of molybdenum, and specified compounds.  The MoCon REACH data is not yet included in this IMOA database in the form of individual studies, but much of the core data is already publicly available in articles published in peer-reviewed technical journals.
