December 2017

Welcome to ‘Stainless Solutions’ from IMOA. Each month, we will cover a different stainless steel issue with tips on design and specification, and links to technical resources.  This month’s issue introduces the significantly expanded 2018 library and updated training modules for architects and engineers.
New 2018 Stainless Steel Library & Classes

New 2018 Stainless Steel Library
The Stainless Steel Building & Construction Library is a one-stop, non-commercial technical resource compiled by the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA) and the Nickel Institute. Previous versions have been highly valued by architects, engineers, fabricators, building owners, contractors, and others working with stainless steel in the building and construction industry.  This is a comprehensive, downloadable collection of the best free technical information, resources, articles and case studies available anywhere.

The new 2018 version contains over 550 PDFs, which is about a 50% increase over the 2015 version.  The information is categorized into seven primary topic areas:

  • Applications
  • Finishes & Nickel Plating
  • Alloy Selection & Specification
  • Fabrication/Cleaning
  • Structural Design
  • Sustainability, Resilience, Health & Safety
  • Educational Programs

Sub files are used to further categorize the information by topic. Information has been provided to assist with design, engineering, sustainability assessment, fabrication, installation and maintenance cleaning.

The application examples are diverse and include elaborate facades and roofs, structural stainless steel and glass walls, pedestrian bridges, infrastructure, restoration projects, ductwork, memorials, swimming pools, transit structures, interiors, industrial buildings, alternative energy, water and other subjects.

The Finishes file contains brochures and articles illustrating the wide range of aesthetic options.

Alloy Selection & Specification contains our latest 2017 Specification & Guideline list as well as general information on the different stainless steel alloys and guidance for design and specification in corrosive locations. Additionally, there are topic specific pieces on coastal and deicing salt exposure, soil environments, fire resistance, and other subjects.

Fabrication contains comprehensive brochures on austenitic and duplex stainless steel fabrication as well as topic specific information on welding, forming, machining, cleaning, erection, and other subjects.

Structural Design contains the Eurocode design guide and AISC design tables for stainless steel as well as case studies and technical information on relevant topics.

Sustainability, Resilience, Health & Safety has case studies, examples of durability, papers on stainless steel use in hygienic applications, recycling LCI and LCA information, and answers to common questions.

Stainless Steels Educational Programs for Architects and Engineers
The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) developed 11 short and informative educational modules for practicing architects and engineers, students and educators. No prior knowledge of stainless steel is required. A new version was developed for 2017. The English version is contained in the above mentioned library or can be downloaded individually:

The modules are also available in French, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Spanish. The individual english modules as well as other educational content can be downloaded from the IMOA website.

What is IMOA?

IMOA (International Molybdenum Association) is a non-profit industry association, which provides technical information to assist with successful specification of molybdenum-containing materials. Molybdenum is an element. When it is added to stainless steel, molybdenum increases its resistance to corrosion caused by deicing salts, coastal atmosphere and pollution.
